In celestial mechanics, the true anomaly is an angular parameter that defines the position of a body moving along a Keplerian orbit. It is the angle between the direction of periapsis and the current position of the body, as seen from the main focus of the ellipse (the point around which the object orbits). The true anomaly is usually denoted by the Greek letters ν or θ, or the Roman letter f. The true anomaly is one of three angular parameters ("anomalies") that define a position along an orbit; the other two being the eccentric anomaly and the mean anomaly. At a certain moment, an asteroid is at this position in heliocentric ecliptic coordinates: x = +0.9989289 y = -0.1130118 z = 0 The true anomaly of this point in the orbit is 4.3266930 radians. The asteroid's orbit has a semimajor axis of 1.319533 AU and an eccentricity of 0.6519092. Find the mean anomaly. Asked by David S - Sun Jul 23 17:09:29 2006 - - 2 Answers - 12 Comments A. Just in time for breakfast! First you've got to find the eccentric anomaly. It's about 5.0902029 radians. Then it's a straightforward application of Kepler's equation. The mean anomaly is 5.6961351 radians. Answered by jenab6 - Sun Jul 23 18:35:49 2006 Halley s Comet has a period of 75.32 years and perihelion passage was in Feb. 9, 1986 at a distance of 0.586AU? Q. Can you figure out these quantities?
Q. Here's an easy orbit question. An asteroid is in an orbit with a semimajor axis of 2.3 AU and an eccentricity of 0.25. It's mean anomaly is currently 45 degrees. Calculate: 1. Its period in days 2. Its perihelion distance in AU 3. Its aphelion distance in AU 4. Its orbital angular momentum per unit mass in MKS units 5. Its eccentric anomaly in degrees 6. Its true anomaly in degrees 7. Its current speed relative to the sun in meters per second Ding! Times up! Here are the answers. 1. Its period in days. answer: P = 2.3^1.5 = 3.488 years = 1274 days 2. Its perihelion distance. answer: q = a(1-e) = 1.725 AU 3. Its aphelion distance. answer: p = a(1+e) = 2.875 AU 4. Its orbital angular momentum per unit mass. answer: GM = 1.32712440018E2 [cont.] Asked by Dump the liberals into Jupiter - Sat Nov 22 01:23:55 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. 1. 1,274.04 DAYS 2. 1.725 AU 3. 23.575 AU (that seems way too large, I'l have to double check that, perhaps my math is suffering... not unusual) 4-6 I have never even been exposed to these calculations/formulas, sorry. 7.
